EHS wrestlers open with losses

Effingham High School's wrestling squad started off its season Wednesday with three tough matches, hosting Pinckneyville, Highland and Centralia.

The Hearts dropped all three matches, losing to Pinckneyville 54-24, Highland 52-25 and Centralia 54-30.

"We did have a couple of three-match winners," said EHS Coach Scott Detwiler. "Dyllan Rincker at 112 pounds, Nick Hage at 145 and Anthony Michaels at 160. We had two-match winners in Cody Harpster at 140 and Keith Lasher at 152.

"I am not overjoyed by losing three matches, but it looks like we will be pretty solid at the middle weights (140-160). I am also happy with the efforts of the first year wrestlers who were on the mat trying to use what we've been working on.

"It is extremely frustrating to me to watch other teams walk in with full teams and plenty to spare and we can't fill our roster. We just give up too many points on forfeits. This situation will somewhat even out as we go, when we have wrestlers return from injuries and weights are allowed to come down per the IHSA guidelines."

The Hearts' next match will be Saturday, Dec. 5 at Cumberland.
