Hearts open girls season with win at Kerans tourney

Effingham Daily News

NEWTON — Effingham High School successfully opened its girls basketball season in the Bob Kerans Tournament Tuesday evening at Newton High School.

The Hearts handed host Newton a 52-30 loss in the round robin event. In the opening game, Cumberland downed Flora 40-28.

The Hearts trailed Newton 11-6 after the first quarter, but came back with a 9-4 run to knot the score at 15-15 at halftime. Effingham then came roaring out in the third period with an 18-7 run and finished out with a 19-8 tally.

Tatiana Colclasure led the Hearts with 16 points, while Sam Zerrusen was right behind with 15. Each connected on a three-pointer.

Newton was led by Amy Koebele with eight points.

"We had depth and our fullcourt pressure in the second half finally wore them down," said EHS Coach Jeff Schafer. "Our hustle was Grade A tonight, but I would say our basketball execution was a C."

In the opening contest, Cumberland claimed a 40-28 victory over Flora. The Pirates led 12-7 after the opening quarter and 20-10 at halftime. The Pirates held Flora to one point in the third period to lead 28-11.

Kennedy Gabel tallied 14 points to lead the winners. She hit five field goals, including four three-pointers. Macy Shupe and Katie Swingler had eight points each.

The tournament continues Friday as Cumberland meets Effingham at 1:30 p.m. followed by Newton taking on Flora at 3.
