Newton, Cumberland win at Cumberland Thanksgiving tourney

TOLEDO — Newton High School trounced Martinsville 80-36, while Cumberland downed Beecher City 55-44 in the Cumberland Boys Thanksgiving Basketball Tournament Tuesday evening.

Newton took a 14-8 opening quarter lead then banged home 27 points to lead 41-22 at the half. The Eagles continued their vicious run with a 21-6 third period lead.

Four players hit double digits for the Eagles. Jake Pilman, a 6-foot senior, tallied 14, while Taylor Kerner, a 6-foot junior, added 13. With 10 points each were Peyton Wyatt, a 6-foot sophomore, and Alex Frohning, a 6-foot senior. Seven other players scored in the contest.

Newton now sports a 2-0 tourney record.

In the second contest, Cumberland had a big jump on Beecher City in the opening quarter with a 16-5 run. The Eagles connected on only one basket and three free throws.

But Beecher City came back within 29-20 at the half as Luke Levitt tallied eight points.

Cumberland pulled farther ahead with a 15-6 run in the third period and then held off the Eagles in the final quarter.

The Pirates were led by four players in double figures. Cole Miller and Reed Draper tallied 12 each, while Silas Gabel and Jannis Taschner added 10 each.

Beecher City was led by L. Levitt with 13 and Drew Levitt with 10.

The tournament continues tonight as Beecher City takes on Newton at 6 p.m. followed by Cumberland against St. Elmo at 7:30.
