Area runners compete in cross country sectionals

DECATUR — All area squads and individuals competed in two cross country sectionals Saturday, the Class 1A Decatur St. Teresa Sectional and the Class 2A Decatur MacArthur Sectional. However, the two sectionals took place on the same course, at the Hickory Point Golf course.

Three area runners were the only ones to make it out of sectional competition and on to state tournament action this coming Saturday at Peoria's Detwiler Park.

Effingham St. Anthony's Liz Wortman, Altamont's Grace Ziegler and Cowden-Herrick's Alex Turner advanced after placing as individuals not members of qualifying teams. The top five teams and top seven individuals not members of qualifying teams advanced.

Wortman finished sixth in the Class 1A Decatur St. Teresa Sectional with a time of 19:14.30. Ziegler finished 13th with a time of 19:36.90.

Winning the meet was Bloomington Central Catholic's Kelly Curran in 18:36.55. The top five included Curran, Aimee Sims (Kankakee McNamara) in 18:42.15; Ellen Devereux (St. Teresa) in 18:51.60; Grace McCormack (St. Teresa) in 19:04.85 and Alex Van Hoof (Bloomington Central Catholic) in 19:09.80.

The top five teams were St. Teresa with 76 points, Bloomington C.C. with 98, St. Joseph-Ogden with 110, Kankakee McNamara with 165 and Shelbyville with 182.

Also competing but not advancing was the St. Anthony, Altamont, Neoga and Teutopolis teams and three runners from Newton.

In the boys' meet, Beecher won the team title with 44 points and advanced along with Monticello 112, Urbana University 121, Robinson 123, St. Joseph-Ogden 130 and Stanford Olympia 192.

Winning the meet was Beecher's Grant Nykaza with a time of 15:50.55. He was followed by his brother Griffin Nykaza with a time of 15:51.15.

Cowden-Herrick's Alex Turner advanced by placing 12th with a time of 16:51.15. Also competing but not advancing were St. Anthony and Teutopolis teams, along with individuals from Neoga, Dieterich and Newton.

Class 2A Dec. MacArthur

Effingham had two boys and three girls competing in the Class 2A Decatur MacArthur Sectional, but none of them advanced to state.

Advancing as teams in the boys meet were Springfield 125, Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin 134, Chatham Glenwood 146, Mount Zion 153 and Champaign Centennial 172. Winning the individual title was Ryan Root of Centennial with a time of 16:02.65.

Effingham's Nick Gardewine was 119th in 18:38.5, while Cody Harpster was 129th in 18:59.8.

In the girls meet, teams advancing were Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin 50, Springfield 91, Mount Vernon 127, Chatham Glenwood 169 and Champaign Centennial 175.

The top runner was Margo Richardson of Mount Vernon with a time of 18:03.10.

Effingham's Kelsey Cramsey took 78th in 21:48.5, while Tatiana Colclasure was 103rd in 22:50.1 and Shayna Bushue was 134th in 24:43.
