10-run fifth leads Dieterich past St. Elmo

Effingham Daily News

DIETERICH — St. Elmo High School led its Tuesday non-conference baseball game by a 2-1 margin after 4 1/2 innings at Dieterich, but the host Movin' Maroons rattled off 10 fifth-inning runs on the way to a six-inning 12-2 victory.

Dieterich (2-0) got six strong innings from starter Eric Robards, who struck out 10 and walked just three. He allowed one earned run and one unearned run on five hits to get the win.

For the Eagles (0-1), Zeke Asher started and gave up seven runs (five earned) in four innings; after Asher ran into trouble in the fifth, fellow junior Adam Seibert also struggled before Patrick Schaal finally got St. Elmo out of the disastrous stanza.

Blake Kuhl was 2-for-3 with three runs scored for the Maroons, while Tyler Campbell and Darin Probst were each 2-for-4. Robards and Cody Hinterscher were both 2-for-3.

St. Elmo, which was outhit 11-5 on the day, got a 2-for-2 showing from Kase Stolte; Seibert went 1-for-2 and scored both Eagle runs.

The Eagles are back on the road Thursday, when they will be hosted by North Clay (Louisville).

Dieterich, which also won a 5-3 junior varsity game, will face its first road opposition when it heads to Altamont Friday.

Make it two wins in two days to open the season for North Clay (Louisville), which hosted new Midland Trail Conference foe Webber Township (Bluford) and sent the Trojans home smarting from an 11-1 shellacking in six innings.

Jonah Zink allowed just three hits and two walks on the hill for the Cardinals (2-0), striking out a half-dozen and also going 1-for-3 with two walks at the plate.

Webber (1-1) committed 10 errors as it failed to follow up Monday's 13-12 win over Wayne City; North Clay scored four in the third and five more in the fifth as it ended the blowout an inning early thanks to the 10-run rule.

Colton Bailey singled and drew two bases-loaded walks and Keith Limes was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI for the Cardinals, who scored 10 unearned runs heading into this weekend's North Clay Wooden Bat Showcase at Olney Central College.
