Rohlfing stays hot for St. Anthony golf squad

SAVOY — Effingham St. Anthony High School golfer Derek Rohlfing's red-hot early-season play continued Monday at the University of Illinois Orange Course, where the junior medaled with a two-over par round of 74 at the 18-hole John Macek Memorial Tournament hosted by Champaign Centennial High School.

Rohlfing's round was the highlight of a third-place run for the Bulldogs, who shot a team score of 408 to finish four strokes behind second-place Bloomington and 16 strokes behind champion Champaign St. Thomas More in the 15-team event.

Five scores from each team counted toward the final tallies.

St. Thomas More, always a nemesis for St. Anthony golf, placed three boys in the top 10 of the final individual standings; all three kept their scores under 80, while Rohlfing was the only Bulldog to do so on the difficult course.

Kit Koerner turned in an 82 for St. Anthony, while Michael McHugh had an 83, Johan Selling turned in an 84 and Lewis Martin had an 85. James Jansen's 86 missed the final cut.

"We didn't play our best," said St. Anthony coach Phil Zaccari. "The Orange course is a great challenge even if you play it regularly, and we had three players new to the challenge.

"We left a lot of strokes on the course as our guys had trouble really getting into any kind of rhythm. The wind was blowing, and it took some of our guys a few holes to make the necessary adjustments."

With the average enrollment of the schools represented well over 1000, Zaccari was pleased to see his squad hold its own — and then some.

"We competed very well with schools much larger than we are," said Zaccari. "Derek continued his excellent start to the season by winning individual medalist honors for the second tournament in a row."

St. Anthony has some time to catch its breath and work out some of the kinks as it is off until Wednesday, Sept. 3, when it travels to Salem.

At Windsor

While some of the Bulldogs were playing the tournament in Savoy, the rest of the St. Anthony team headed over to Angus Links Golf Course in Windsor to win a quadrangular varsity match over Sullivan, Shelbyville and Okaw Valley (Bethany).

Sophomore Michael Koester blistered the course to the tune of a one-under 34 in nine holes, medaling while teammate and classmate Lance Harris also kept it under 40 with a round of 39.

Ryan Mefford's 41 and Ryan Jansen's 42 rounded out the St. Anthony team score of 156, while Zach Bradshaw's 46 and Ryan Ragland's 47 didn't figure into the final tally.

Sullivan was the only team to stay somewhat close as it turned in a score of 179; Shelbyville was third at 218 and Okaw Valley brought up the rear at 227.

"We had some good efforts at Angus today," said Zaccari. "Michael really stepped up; we need a consistent effort like that from him if we're going to real all of our goals.

"Lance also played well; you can see the summer work he put in showing results. Our depth once again paid dividends for us."

It certainly did as St. Anthony improved its match play record to 10-0.

In junior varsity play, James Hutchison turned in a 39 as St. Anthony defeated Sullivan 180-223; Derek Hutchison added a 46, as did Jared Lin. Theo Fifer's and Adam Hecht each shot rounds of 49, while Connor Kabbes had a 55.

At Salem

Teutopolis High School dropped its first girls' golf match play event of the season, falling in a dual meet to Salem at Salem Country Club.

T-town (0-1) scored a 249 in the nine-hole match, while Salem turned in a 209. Salem's Taylor Landers medaled with a 41.

For the Wooden Shoes, Taylor Hinkle led the way with a 52 and Make'l Westendorf shot a 53; Logan Bueker, Claire Deters, Jaelen Deters and Amber Will all shot rounds of 72 to round out Teutopolis' scoring.

Boys Match

Teutopolis also dropped a dual boys match to Salem, scoring a 191 to Salem's 156 and falling to 0-1.

Blake Thoele and Brock Sandschafer turned in twin rounds of 46, while Colten Brown shot a 47 and Ryan Buenerkemper had a 52 to give the Wooden Shoes their total.

Trey Braun also scored a 52, while Jordan Deters carded a 58. Teutopolis also dropped the junior varsity match with a 239 to Salem's 174.
