NEWTON — What did J.D. Finn, Randall Finn and Michael Rogers have in common Tuesday at the 138th Annual Jasper County Fair harness races? They all picked up two victories as drivers during the third day of racing at Newton.
Rogers opened the day with a victory in the Big 10 3-Year-Old Filly Trot, first division behind You Go Girl. Rogers hung back as he was bunched behind Fox Valley Lainey, Flashy Kathy and GLS Fancy Face throughout most of the race. Right before the three quarter mile marker, Rogers took You Go Girl three wide and eased into second place. Down the stretch the filly put the moves on and claimed the victory in 2:06 3/5.
It was the second win in three lifetime starts, both this season for the filly owned by Gloria Ann Cisna of Springfield. Finishing second was J.D. Finn behind Fox Valley Lainey. The filly is owned by Ray Hanna of Altamont and Bryce Geiler of Kinmundy. Hanna is the trainer.
Then it was J.D. Finn's turn to drive to a victory behind Rainbow Victoria in the second division. The filly came into the race as one of the quicker fillies in the state this season. Rainbow Victoria and Likely Legend went to the lead quickly.
But Clear Creek Koko came on to take a four-length lead at the quarter mile marker and held a three-length lead at the half. Rainbow Victoria came on to push ahead at the three quarter mile mark then maintained control down the stretch to win in 2:02 1/5.
The third race went to Randall Finn behind Mystical Zone. Owned and trained by Altamont's Pamela Coleman, Mystical Zone was the first out and went wire-to-wire to win by 10 lengths in 2:03 2/5 in the first division of the Big 10 3-Year-Old Colt Trot. Also part owners are J.D. Graham of Salem and Mystical Marker Farms LLC of Chicago Heights.
The three drivers were out of the running in the next two races. In the second division of the colt trot, Chugwater claimed the win in 2:03 for driver Thomas Graham Jr.
This was a fast field as Band Star pushed the time going 29 4/5 after one quarter for a six-length lead and 58 4/5 at the half to lead by 15 lengths. Band Star still held the lead at the three-quarter mile marker by six, but that lead evaporated as the colt tired allowing Chugwater to come on to draw away by seven at the finish line in 2:03.
The victory was the third in five starts for the Graham-owned colt and its second fastest half mile track win.
Then Brian Cotton got his turn behind the sulky to take Romantic Belle to victory in the first division of the Nonwinners $1,000 Lifetime 3-Year-Old Illinois Conceived & Foaled Pace.
Romantic Belle scooted to the front at the first turn and led by a length and a half at the quarter. The filly was pressured by Mother Of Curses, but held on to win in 2:04 3/5. It was the first win in three lifetime starts.
Rogers came back to take his second victory of the meet behind Acapulco Joe in the second division of the nonwinners $1,000 lifetime pace. Acapulco Joe, in his first money start, came through with the win in 2:04 4/5.
B B Eric captured the third division with a time of 2:03 3/5. J.D. Finn was in the bike and showed the way around the turn after the half. The horses were bunched on the backside, but down the homestretch B B Eric continued to hold the lead for the win in 2:03 3/5.
B B Eric is owned by Shelton Elmore of Mason and took its first win in its second lifetime start. It was the second win of the day for J.D. Finn.
Driver Michael White picked up his third career victory behind KB's Charge in the first division of the 2-Year-Old Maiden Trot. It was a two-horse race between KB's Charge and Shawnee Mission after breaks narrowed the field down.
The pair dueled until KB's Charge, bred by Fair Meadow Farm, came on down the homestretch to win in 2:12 1/5.
Randall Finn came back for his second driving win behind Earli Morning Star in the second division of the 2-year-old maiden trot. Lynn's Two Spot took a five-length lead at the half and moved that to 15 going down the backstretch. But Earli Morning Star came roaring from behind to win in 2:14 3/5 down the homestretch.
The final race of the day, the third division of the 2-year-old maiden trot went to Brilliant Ritual. Owned by Norman Kaiser of Altamont and James Hughes of Cisne, Brilliant Ritual was first away and pushed into a five-length lead at the quarter. Brilliant Ritual didn't give up the lead and won in 2:10 2/5 for driver Tom T. Tetrick.
Racing at the Jasper County Fair will come to a close today with an evening program. Post time is set for 6 p.m. with six races on the agenda.
