TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — With the Mattoon Firecracker Classic looming ahead, Effingham Post 120 traveled to Terre Haute Tuesday and dropped an 8-2 Senior American Legion baseball decision.
Chase and Chad Green provided half of Effingham's six hits in the scheduled nine-inning affair; Chase singled, while Chad singled, doubled and drove in a run.
Terre Haute scored two in the first inning off Post 120 starter Austin Mahaffey and led 7-0 before Effingham managed a couple scores in the top of the eighth.
"We were understandably flat," said Post 120 coach Kenny Miller. "We were coming out of a tournament last weekend and heading into another (today).
"The problem is we are running out of season to find offensive consistency. We have a tendency to take the day off one day and then turn it on another — but it just doesn't work that way."
Ben Mehl drove in Effingham's other run in the eighth, while Jeremy Jansen hit a double. Ben Sherrick and Cody McCollum each contributed base hits.
"We've got to start playing with focus and consistency and a regular basis from this day forward," said Miller, whose 21-7 squad will open play in the Mattoon tournament at Lake Land College today against Kansas. Game time is set for 3:15 p.m.
