Post 120 juniors demolish South Central

Effingham Daily News

KINMUNDY — Five different Effingham players hit home runs in Wednesday's Junior American Legion baseball doubleheader at Kinmundy Lions Field, helping Post 120 the demolish South Central by 17-5 and 15-2 scores.

Four of those long balls came in the opener, a game in which Post 120 totaled 19 hits — but also trailed 4-1 after two innings.

South Central got all over Effingham starter Greg Schmidt in the first three innings, but Matt Hecht took the mound in the fourth with the score tied 5-5 and allowed one hit in his three innings of work.

Hecht, who struck out six, was the benefactor of a seven-run fifth. After a five-run seventh, Brandon Kronewitter manned the hill to finish the game off.

Alex Brown ended the opener with four RBIs, hitting a two-run homer in the seventh and also doubling. Brad Reedy hit a solo shot in the first and also singled twice for a total of three RBIs, while Sam Thoele singled and hit a two-run blast in the third.

Patrick Schutzbach hit the fourth round-tripper of the game, a solo homer in the seventh. He also doubled, while Austin Hayes had a three-hit game. Jonah Zink, Hecht and Mitchell Dasenbrock all contributed two-hit efforts.

South Central led again in the late game, taking a 2-1 advantage after one frame. Effingham responded swiftly with four in the second and nine in the third.

Mitch Wohltman was the winning pitcher, while Kronewitter singled and drilled a two-run shot in the second. Zink singled and tripled with two RBIs, while Thoele doubled and tripled with an RBI.

Brown and Wohltman each hit RBI singles, while Schmidt singled and both Tyler Bushue and Tyler Pilcher contributed RBIs.

Effingham's record improves to 23-3 heading into Saturday's 1 p.m. home doubleheader with Salem. Breese and Champaign are in town Sunday; Breese and Champaign square off in the first game at noon, while Effingham will face Breese then Champaign in the next two matchups.
