DECATUR — Effingham High School junior Chelsey Watkins picked up a first-place medal in the 1600 meter run Tuesday, headlining a successful showing for the Flaming Hearts' girls' track and field squad at the Decatur Herald & Review Area Best Meet.
Watkins turned in a time of five minutes, 45.9 seconds to win the mile race at Millikin University while Altamont sophomore Justine Seidel took third in 5:50.7.
Meanwhile, Jenna Daugherty set an EHS school record in the triple jump, leaping 34 feet, 1 inch to take second in the meet by only two inches.
Other Tuesday medalists for the EHS girls' team included Kierstyn Bone, who took third in the 100 meter hurdles at 16.14 seconds, and Jena Hecht, who took third in the 300 meter hurdles in 49.34 seconds.
On the boys' side, Effingham senior Andy Cohorst took fourth in the shot put with a 47-1 throw. St. Elmo/Brownstown sophomore Dillon Holloway was the winner at 49-1 1/2, setting a new Brownstown High School record with the throw.
Effingham wasn't the only city school to bring home good results from the meet; Effingham St. Anthony's Matt Feldhake won the 1,600 meter run in 4:41.7, while St. Anthony's girls' 3,200 meter relay won by nearly 20 seconds in 10:26.5.
Neoga's 800 meter relay was a winner in the girls' meet with a time of 1:52.8 while Cody Boarman won the boys' 400 in 51.2 seconds.
Altamont's Justin Heiden picked up a 42.4-second victory in the 300 hurdles, while Newton's Scott Mammoser easily won the pole vault at 14-6, two feet higher than any other competitor could clear. Corey Hahn, who has been a leader in the area in the 800, captured that event with at time of 2:06. Hahn has committed to Indiana State University.
Another winner from Newton was Nikki Snearley, who took the girls' high jump at 5 feet, 2 inches; teammate Maura Cummins came in second at an even five feet while Neoga's Whitney Haskett was third at 5-0 in more attempts.
