South Central picks up road win

LOUISVILLE — Heath Sigrist was 4-for-5 and Zac Cain drove in three runs as South Central High School picked up an 8-5 road win at North Clay (Louisville) in Monday baseball action.

Cain hit two home runs at Louisville — a two-run shot in the first and a solo shot in the third as the Cougars piled up a 7-0 lead after 3 1/2 innings.

North Clay, which used five different pitchers in preparation for this week's regionals, got four back in the fourth on Clint Quinn's RBI double, Austin Kemmerer's RBI single and a two-run homer from Preston Greenwood.

South Central (17-12) is the top seed in its own Class 1A regional this week, where it will face either No. 11 Mulberry Grove or No. 9 Sandoval Wednesday.

North Clay (14-7) is tops at Edwards County (Albion) with a No. 2 seeding and also plays Wednesday against either No. 10 Wayne City or No. 9 Grayville.

At Hume

Neoga traveled to Hume to face East Central and held a 5-0 lead, but couldn't hold it as it fell 7-6.

The Indians (8-16) scored three in the third and two more in the fourth to go ahead by five but East Central (23-8) began the comeback with four in the fifth and went up with two in the sixth.

Bryn Price took the loss for Neoga, which is a No. 4 seed and plays Thursday at the Class 1A Tuscola Regional against either No. 10 Arcola or No. 6 Martinsville.

At Newton

Newton closed out its regular season with a home win over Casey-Westfield, improving to 14-14 with a 5-4 victory over the Warriors.

Adam French went five to get the win for the Eagles while singling three times with an RBI. Nick Mammoser singled home a run while Kelby McCoy had an RBI double.

Newton is the No. 7 seed at the Class 2A Olney Regional and faces No. 3 Mount Carmel Thursday in a semifinal contest.
