EHS tennis downs Newton, T-town remains unbeaten

NEWTON — Effingham High School handed Newton a 4-1 defeat in Apollo Conference tennis competition Tuesday.

The Hearts' Kory Poland was a winner at No. 1, 6-1, 6-1, while Derek Minor took the No. 2 spot, 6-3, 6-4. Newton's Seth Woods claimed the No. 3 singles, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.

In doubles, Effingham won both matches. Ryan Hoekstra and Paul Kenter combined for a 6-1, 6-0 victory. Logan Ellington and Craig Minor were 6-3, 6-1 winners.

"Wow, two gorgeous days in a row to watch and play tennis," said EHS Coach Kaye Kimpling. "It was fun watching the two Brazilians, Gabriel Facioli for Newton and Rodrigo Verginelli for us, play each other in exhibition."

The Hearts improve to 4-0 in the conference, 8-1 overall. EHS is back in action Thursday hosting Paris.

At Charleston

Teutopolis High School remained on the unbeaten trail by downing Charleston 8-1. The Wooden Shoes improve to 12-0.

Michael Vogt, Andy Buscher, Lee Buehnerkemper, Michael Brummer, Nick Weber and Jeremy Niebrugge nabbed singles wins. Vogt went 6-4, 6-4, while Buscher blanked his opponent, 6-0, 6-0. Buehnerkemper won 6-2, 6-0, Brummer 6-0, 6-1, Weber 6-0, 6-2 and Niebrugge 6-3, 6-2.

In doubles play, Kyle Swingler and Kolby Spiker were 6-0, 6-4 winners at No. 1. Willie Jansen and Ryan Deters combined to beat their opponents 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2.

The Wooden Shoes are back in action Thursday facing another undefeated team, Effingham St. Anthony.
