Weekend boys basketball roundup

DIETERICH — Dieterich High School hosted Newton in non-conference boys basketball play Saturday and handed the Eagles a 53-49 defeat.
The Movin' Maroons edged out to a 7-5 opening quarter lead then had a 16-9 run to lead 23-14 at halftime. Dieterich had a 12-10 third period lead, but Newton fought back with a 25-18 final period run, but fell short.
Three Dieterich players finished in double figures. Blake Kuhl, Taran Bohnhoff and Jeremy Ohnesorge tallied 14 points each.
Newton was led by Jake Pilman with 19 and Peyton Wyatt with 13.

Cumberland came calling at Martinsville and picked up a 65-38 non-conference victory.
The Pirates held a 32-22 halftime lead then outscored the Bluestreaks 33-16 in the second half.
Cole Miller tallied 16 for the winners, while Reed Draper added 15 and Silas Gabel 14. The Pirates improve to 16-7 on the season.

At Nokomis
Stewardson-Strasburg suffered a tough-luck 68-65 loss to Nokomis in a non-conference contest that went two overtimes Saturday.
Nokomis jumped out to a 17-9 opening quarter lead, but Stew-Stras came back to outscore the Redskins over the next two quarters to pull within 40-38 and tie the score, sending the game into overtime.
In the second overtime session, Dylan Goldsmith made a three-point shot with less than a second left on the clock to put the Redskins up 68-65. Stew-Stras called a time out with only 0:0.3 showing on the clock and a last ditch attempt for a tip-in failed.
Stew-Stras was led by Will Rincker with 24 and Jon Hoene with 15. The Comets are 12-9 on the season, while Nokomis improved to 19-6. Stew-Stras is at Pana Tuesday.

Beecher City handed Centralia Christ Our Rock Lutheran a 64-49 non-conference loss Saturday.
The Eagles were led by the duo of Beau Hutchinson and Luke Levitt with 19 points each. Also in double figures was Dan Lagerhausen with 12. The Eagles are now 6-13 on the season.
In the opening game of the St. Elmo Freshman/Sophomore Tournament, Beecher City defeated Ramsey 68-50.
