Connie Stodden

Trilla, IL — We call to unceasing remembrance Connie Linn (Stephens) Stodden: Her unfeigned works of faith, her selfless labors of love, and her patient hopes of eternal life that God has promised.

Born to Rev. William E. and Flora “Mickey” (Hardesty) Stephens in Mattoon Dec. 12, 1955, Connie came to know the Lord at an early age. She experienced a joyful home and church-centered childhood and youth in rural Trilla.

On June 11, 1972, Connie married Charles L. Stodden, and as a virtuous wife, faithful friend, and loving helpmate, blessed his life for over 37 years.

Connie bore nine children and enjoyed eight grandchildren. It was her greatest delight and ambition to teach them to fear the Lord and to leave a heritage of walking in His ways.

As a servant of the Lord, Connie won many souls to Christ. In reaching out her hands to the poor and those in need, teaching school, writing songs, singing, playing the piano, and always being ready with an encouraging word, Connie loved investing in those that God brought into her life.

At 3:45 p.m. on Friday, March 5, 2010, surrounded by family at her residence in her hometown of Trilla, Connie went home to the Lord.

Having gained her eternal reward, she leaves behind her loving husband, Charles; nine children: Charles J. Stodden and wife Carmen, Cora Weber and husband Bret, Cynthia Bowen and husband Matt, Naomi, Bianca, Briana, Samuel, William, and Luke Stodden; eight grandchildren; her mother, Flora “Mickey” Stephens; and four siblings: Louise Cartright and husband Arlie, Bonnie Beals and husband Wilbert, Ed Stephens and wife Marynelle, and Patty Dixon and husband Mike.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Visitation for family and friends was held Tuesday from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Schilling Funeral Home, 1301 Charleston Ave., Mattoon. Funeral services honoring her life will begin at 10 a.m. today at the New Mercy Worship Center, 301 Richmond Ave. East, Mattoon, with the Revs. Carl Lamoreaux and Ed Stephens officiating. Private family burial will be at a later date.

Memorials may be made in Connie’s honor to: Samaritan Ministries, P.O. Box 3618, Peoria, IL 61612.
