UPDATE: Altamont bank robbery suspects in custody

ALTAMONT — Nobody was injured when an Altamont bank was robbed Tuesday afternoon, police and bank officials said.

Less than an hour after the robbery, two suspects were arrested on Interstate 70 in Bond County - in a vehicle that had been exceeding 100 miles per hour. Police had not released the suspects' names by late afternoon Tuesday.

Peoples Bank & Trust, 511 S. Main St., was robbed at about 2 p.m. by what police initially described as a man in a dark long coat and long pants. It is unknown at this time how much was taken. The lone suspect was last seen running toward Altamont Grade School. The school was locked down until police could determine the suspect was no longer in the area.

Within minutes, police from several agencies converged upon bank and school, restricting access to both buildings during the course of the investigation.

Altamont Police Chief Alan Heiens confirmed that two suspects had been arrested during the Bond County traffic stop. Bank President John Gardner was just glad nobody got hurt during the robbery.

"We're really pleased that our employees are safe," Gardner said. "We're also appreciative of the strong turnout of law enforcement."

Altamont police were joined at the scene by Illinois State Police, Effingham County Sheriff John Monnet and several deputies and Illinois Secretary of State's Police.

Further details of the robbery were unavailable at presstime.
