State board of education consolidates regional offices

EFFINGHAM — The Illinois State Board of Education redrew a map Friday consolidating the state's regional education offices ahead of a Saturday deadline, and the move has area superintendents upset.

This summer, the General Assembly mandated that the 44 regions outside Cook County shrink to 35. Several western Illinois regions voluntarily combined through actions of their respective county boards. The Illinois State Board of Education was originally giving counties until next year to make any other changes.

However, the General Assembly threw a wrench in those plans during the recent veto session, when the law was amended to force a reorganization plan to be in place by today.

Effingham and Fayette counties will be affected by the plan passed Friday by the state board. The board voted to consolidate the Effingham-Bond-Fayette region with the Christian-Montgomery region.
