A local drive is helping to ensure seniors warm their feet as much as their hearts this holiday season.
Jansen’s Heating and Air is collecting socks for seniors as part of a nationwide program that started in Ohio 12 years ago to bring a necessity, along with some holiday cheer, to lonely and financially strapped seniors.
“I saw the Daily News article and thought it would be a nice gesture,” said Kayla Darling of Jansen’s Heating and Air, referring to a publication of the nonprofit program. “It’s a way to give back to the community. We like to be involved.”
Starting Saturday through Dec. 23, Jansen’s will be accepting new socks at its Effingham facility on west U.S. 40 and at its Pana location. Jansen’s service technicians also will accept donations on site, and donors will be given a $5 reduction on their bill.
The socks will then be delivered, along with a snack, to local nursing facilities and assisted living centers during the holidays. Darling said the number of places reached will depend on the number of socks that are donated.
The local effort has already generated donations through word of mouth and Darling said some of the local facilities are really excited about the program
“It’s unfortunate a lot don’t have family members come see and visit them,” she said.
Mary Caldwell knows that all too well.
“Spiritually, it’s really good,” said the Effingham Rehabilitation and Health Care Center Social Service Activity director. “It keeps moral up.”
Caldwell said it’s difficult for residents to get clothing or accessory items when family members live far away.
“Families don’t really think about giving those items as gifts,” she said. “The residents appreciate anything they can get.”
