According to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, hunting numbers were down considerably across the state during opening weekend.
Overall, hunters harvested 55,700 deer, which is fewer than the approximately 77,100 taken during opening weekend of 2012. For the whole seven-day firearm season in 2012, hunters harvested 99,546 deer in Illinois, according to the IDNR.
In Effingham County, 517 deer were shot in opening season last weekend, compared to 728 last year. Elsewhere, Clay County dropped from 909 to 659, Jasper County dropped from 852 to 658, Fayette County from 1,284 to 1,067, Shelby County from 940 to 714, and Cumberland County from 701 to 444.
“The weather conditions were not ideal,” said IDNR Spokesman Tim Schweizer.
