EFFINGHAM — An hourlong power outage in Effingham County Wednesday, affecting more than 1,000 customers, was due to a problem with a transformer.

"At this point, we don't even know why the transformer went out," said Stacey Shangraw, a spokesperson for Ameren Illinois.

Shangraw said the outage affected Beecher City and Effingham from 2:30 p.m. to about 3:30 p.m. when the power was restored. Businesses off of Keller Drive were also affected by the outage and St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital briefly lost power but Shangraw said Ameren restored power as quickly as possible to the hospital before working to restore power elsewhere.

Shangraw said now that power has been restored, the cause of the outage will not be investigated further by Ameren.

"Usually, what we do is make the repairs and move on," she said. "It's just like when your car breaks down. You just get the engine fixed. You don't take the whole engine apart.. We don't investigate unless we think that the problem may happen again."
