Teen dies in early morning crash

EFFINGHAM — A head-on collision Thursday led to the death of an 18-year-old, who was a senior at Effingham High School.

Brittany N. Baker of Watson was pronounced dead by Coroner Duane Guffey at approximately 7:50 a.m. The accident occurred when a southbound SUV driven by Melly Hofer of Effingham crossed the center line on Route 45 near Central School and struck Baker's car at 7:37 a.m, according to Illinois State Police.

Hofer was transported to St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital and then to Carle Hospital in Urbana. According to officials at Carle Hospital, she is listed in fair condition.

ISP was assisted at the scene by the Effingham County Sheriff’s Department, Effingham County/City Ambulance Service, Watson Fire Department, Effingham Fire Department and Tri-Power Towing.

Hofer was cited for improper lane usage. The crash is still under investigation by the ISP and the coroner's office.
