SHUMWAY — A late night fire in Shumway damaged one resident's house Tuesday.
Shumway firefighters spotted a fire from the station house. Upon immediately reporting to 202 N. First, they found a shed behind the house fully ablaze. Firefighters arrived at the scene at 8:52 p.m. and immediately called a full still.
Mickey Johnson, a resident of the house, said he wasn't aware of the blaze until firefighters responded.
"We could hear sirens but didn't know where they were coming from," he said. "I opened the bedroom door and just saw the blaze."
Firefighters had the blaze under control about 10 minutes after arriving. The fire destroyed the shed, which Johnson said contained a few weed wackers, as well as some items which were going to be sold at a garage sale. It also shattered a window of Johnson's home and melted some of the siding.
Shumway, Watson and Beecher City fire protection districts responded to the scene and Stewardson and Altamont covered the station. Effingham City-County Ambulance was on the scene and Effingham County Sheriff's Department provided traffic support.
Shumway Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Johnathon Paholke said the fire is still under investigation and no cause has been determined.
