EFFINGHAM — Dave Mahon won a four-way battle for the Republican nomination for Effingham County sheriff, while the proposed 1 percent sales tax failed by a decisive margin during Tuesday's primary election.
Mahon, a retired Illinois state trooper, polled 2.968 votes, or 41.43 percent, to take the GOP nomination. As it stands now, he will run unopposed in the November general election unless local Democrats tab someone to run against him.
Effingham County sheriff's deputy Darren Feldkamp placed a strong second with 2,332 votes, or 32.56 percent, while Mike Schutzbach and John Gardner were third and fourth, respectively. Neither Schutzbach nor Gardner polled 15 percent of the vote.
