Contract to save county money for now

EFFINGHAM — Prices don't drop very often in today's society, but the Effingham County Board is getting a break on its elevator maintenance contract for the county's Government Center courts building.

Wednesday, the board's Buildings and Grounds Committee voted to recommend renewal of a contract with KONE Inc. of Springfield. Under terms of the deal, KONE will maintain the government center's four elevators for $1,090.37 per month. For the rest of this year, that is a 7 percent discount from the previous contract. Committee member Karen Luchtefeld said the contract calls for an increase in 2014.

County officials expect to rebid the contract in 2015.

The full board will consider the deal at its Tuesday meeting.

Also Wednesday, the committee recommended the full board consider a proposal by KONE to upgrade the elevator at the Effingham County Office Building for $6,630. Proposed upgrades include a hands-free elevator telephone, opening restrictors for the elevator door and a phase protection device to lessen the chances of the elevator stalling while in use.

In other action Wednesday, the committee recommended paying Butler Chemical $1,275 per quarter to provide chemicals for the cooling tower atop the government center. The chemicals are used to prevent calcium buildup, scale, corrosion and microbial growth.

The elevator ride to the observation deck of the Willis Tower (formerly Sears) in Chicago takes less than 90 seconds. When packed like sardines in a car full of strangers, that ride to the top seemed like an etemity. You didn’t dare speak to anyone, or make eye contact with anyone. Better to just stare at your shoes and gut it out.

Linda Ellis suggests in her poem, "The Dash," when a life comes to an end, the date of one's birth and passing are less important than the dash between those dates. The dash, she says, has a much more powerful designation — what the person did with their life.
