---- — TEUTOPOLIS — Ten years ago this month, Dan Burke was getting ready to graduate from Teutopolis High School.

It’s highly doubtful he aspired to serve on the Unit 50 Board of Education in time for his 10-year reunion.

“No thoughts. No intention of anything like that,” Burke said.

But marriage, children and the stake in a community created by property ownership can change a young man’s perspective, even if he is on the low side of 30.

Burke was sworn in Tuesday as the only new board member, along with incumbents Marty Siemer and Carl Repking.

Burke said he began developing an interest in the Unit 50 district after he and his wife made the commitment to raise their children in the district.

Burke said he hopes to draw upon the experience of fellow board members.

“I think this board has a lot of experienced people on it,” he said. “I look forward to learning from them.”

At Tuesday’s special meeting, Siemer was re-elected president, while Gene Niemerg and Repking retained their vice president and secretary positions, respectively. In addition, Myra Pruemer was elected treasurer.
