Newton driver makes first appearance on meth charges

NEWTON — A man accused of possessing methamphetamine and marijuana made a first appearance in Jasper County Court Tuesday.

Zachary R. Weir, 25, of Newton was in Jasper County Court Tuesday for a first appearance before Judge W.M. Robin Todd. Weir has been charged with possession of methamphetamine, a Class 3 felony. Weir was arrested Friday by Newton Police after a traffic stop. When his vehicle was searched, police discovered a one-hitter pipe, K-2 and methamphetamine.

Weir said he did not know whether he would be able to make the $10,000 bail that has been set for him in the case. He also asked for a public defender at the first appearance.

Weir is set to appear in court again on May 13 at 9 a.m. for a first appearance with counsel.
