Rural Mason man charged with firing gun at another man

EFFINGHAM — Bond was set at $200,000 for a rural Mason man accused of firing a gun at a man who had reportedly been doing repair work on his vehicle.

Mark C. Barnes, 45, was arrested by Effingham County Sheriff's deputies Tuesday in connection with the alleged incident at his residence. A subsequent search of Barnes' home near Mason enabled police to find small amounts of a substance that field-tested positive for methamphetamine, authorities said.

Barnes made his first appearance Thursday in Effingham County Circuit Court, where Judge Ericka Sanders found probable cause to detain Barnes on charges of aggravated discharge of a firearm, possession of  methamphetamine and possession of a weapon with a revoked Firearm Owners Identification Card.

State's Attorney Bryan Kibler said after Thursday's hearing police had received a report that Barnes had fired a gun in another man's direction.

"The man had been doing auto repair work for the defendant," Kibler said. "Obviously, something happened."

Barnes has faced weapons charges before. He was charged with aggravated discharge in 2010, but a plea deal enabled him to avoid a felony. Instead, he was sentenced to 18 months probation on a lesser weapons charge.

Barnes has been ordered to appear in court at 11 a.m. March 13 for a first appearance with counsel. He is expected to retain private counsel, according to court records.
