An accident involving two semitrailers late Sunday caused the deaths of two children and injured others.
According to Illinois State Police District 12, at 9:03 p.m., a semitrailer driven by Matei Tomoiaga, 37, of Axtell, Texas, struck the rear of another semitrailer driven by Javier F. Matute, 57, of Connecticut, on the northbound lanes of Interstate 57 at mile marker 154, near the Watson exit.
Passengers Dayana A. Tomoiaga, 8, and Matei B. Tomoiaga, 5, were ejected from the front of the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. Driver Matei Tomoiaga was partially ejected.
Alina T. Tomoiaga, 31, and 1-year-old Carina N. Tomoiaga were transported to St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital, Effingham, with serious injuries.
Matei Tomoiaga was transported to Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana, also with serious injuries. He was the only one in the vehicle wearing a seat belt. He was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
Authorities closed the northbound lanes of Interstate 57 and rerouted traffic to Illinois 37 for about four hours.
