Man found dead from gunshot wound

ST. ELMO — Fayette County authorities are investigating two unrelated deaths over the weekend.

Matthew Austin, 47, of St. Elmo was found dead in his pickup by a family member at 9:30 p.m. Saturday at 501 W. Cumberland Road in St. Elmo. Austin appeared to have died from a single gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene by Fayette County Coroner Bruce Bowen.

An autopsy was scheduled to be conducted at St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital in Effingham.

Earlier Saturday, Cassandra Pollard, 44, of Effingham was found dead shortly after 9 a.m. in Vandalia by a friend whose home she had been visiting since Friday. Pollard was pronounced dead at the scene by Fayette County Coroner Bruce Bowen at 9:39 a.m.

Pollard’s death remains under investigation by the Fayette County Coroner’s office. An autopsy was scheduled for today at St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital in Effingham.

Bowen did not return repeated phone calls Monday. No more information was available at presstime,
