Major road construction projects slated for area

Gov. Pat Quinn revealed a six-year, $12.62 billion plan Wednesday that will improve the “transportation hub of the nation,” with extensive work to be done in Effingham, Clay and Fayette counties.

The construction program will “improve roads and bridges throughout Illinois while making major investments in public transportation,” a press release stated. “The projects … are part of Gov. Quinn's agenda to create jobs and drive Illinois' economy forward, while updating the state's transportation system.”

The plan will improve 2,142 miles of highway and replace or rehabilitate 517 bridges.

“Illinois is the transportation hub of the nation, and this program will ensure that we have the modern infrastructure needed to compete with the world,” the release further stated. “This major investment in roads, bridges and public transportation will drive economic growth in every part of Illinois and create tens of thousands of jobs.”

Of the $12.62 billion allotted, $9.53 billion will go toward roads, $1.81 billion for public transportation, $1.121 billion to improve railways and the remainder is set aside for airports.

Illinois is anticipating $7.2 billion in federal funds and $1.9 billion in state funds, with the remainder to be covered by local and other sources.

Local projects include:

• Resurfacing on 14.8 miles, bridge deck overlay and bridge repair on Interstate 57, from the Fayette County line to Interstate 70 in Effingham and Clay counties. The projects are scheduled from 2014 to 2019 at a cost of $22 million. Of the total amount, resurfacing and bridge work on the southbound lanes from the Fayette County line to the Little Wabash River are scheduled for fiscal year 2014 at a cost of $9.2 million.

• A bridge replacement on Interstate 70 over the Kaskaskia River, a half mile east of U.S. 51 in Fayette County is scheduled for fiscal year 2014 at a cost of $47.5 million and has been approved for Illinois Major Bridge funding.

• Resurfacing on 26.5 miles, new bridge deck, bridge joint repair, deck repair, rip rap and wing wall repair on Interstate 70, from 1 mile west of U.S. 40 at Brownstown to Little Wabash River west of Effingham in Fayette and Effingham counties. Those projects are scheduled for fiscal years 2015 to 2019 at a cost of $34 million.
