TEUTOPOLIS — A human resources specialist explained Monday the projected impact of the federal Affordable Care Act on school districts.
Travis Bushue of Bushue Human Resources told Teutopolis Unit 50 Board of Education Monday the act, known as Obamacare, could impact school districts in a number of ways. Bushue outlined portions of the act that go into effect this year, including limits to flexible spending accounts and increases in the Medicare tax on earned income, referring to them as “backdoor taxes.”
Bushue also explained the impending Medicaid expansion for low-income citizens, as well as health insurance exchanges.
Superintendent Bill Fritcher said school districts that employ coaches who do not also teach, including Teutopolis, will be particularly affected by the new regulations. Some of those regulations rely on the school district being able to determine the number of full-time equivalent positions.
“They will have to start recording all their schedules,” Fritcher said. “That will create more work for office staffs.”
In another matter Monday, the board agreed to raise the driver’s education fee from $50 to $250 for the 2013-14 school year. Fritcher said the fee helps offset the cost of behind-the-wheel instruction. The increase was one of a number of measures considered by the board during the school district’s recent budget crisis.
Also Monday, the board agreed to set high school graduation for 2:30 p.m. May 12 and eighth grade promotion for 7:30 p.m. May 16.
The board also recognized Laura Wente and Matt Grunloh as January Students of the Month, as well as Janelle Gebben and Rich Overbeck as Rookies of the Month.
Also recognized were winners of the junior high Americanism essay contest: Drew Heuerman, Madison Magee and Emma Beckman.
The board agreed to hire Jessica Heiden as high school head volleyball coach, as well as eighth grade head volleyball coach. Heiden resigned as junior high play co-director, junior varsity volleyball coach and junior high track coach.
During the meeting, the board accepted resignations from Gordon Zuber as fall/spring play director, Amanda Probst as high school head volleyball coach and eighth-grade volleyball coach, and Jann Rhodes as junior high bridge coach.
