FACE (Fine Arts, County of Effingham) is offering a new opportunity for junior high and high school students and young adults to showcase their talents.
FACE Youth Chorus, under the direction of Stephanie Kilzer, is open to young vocalists, dancers and musicians who are interested in further developing their talents and in performing in a variety of venues in the area.
Kilzer, a member of FACE, has taught for more than 23 years, both in the public schools and through private lessons. The inspiration for the Youth Chorus, she said, came from "just some kids talking to me at lessons." The students expressed a desire to have another outlet for their talents, and the idea of a chorus for the younger set was born.
"The kids wanted more exposure and practice with their music," Kilzer said. If everything works out, she added, dual concerts with the Youth Chorus and FACE Community Singers are planned.
The Youth Chorus also is available to perform for area groups. "If any church groups or civic groups are interested, we will cater our show to whatever they want, 1940s, '30s, show tunes ... ," Kilzer said. The group also will perform at private functions. Arrangements for having the group perform can be made by contacting any FACE board member which are listed online at the FACE website, www.effinghamface.com.
Any young adult who wants to participate in the chorus will have the opportunity to perform, according to Kilzer. "Everyone should have a couple of solos tucked away that they can pull out," she said. "We will work on solos with each person."
In addition, Kilzer said, if enough participants are interested in showcasing their dance talent, the group will provide an opportunity for dancers to perform.
The number of participants in the new group's practices has varied, as students balance school, church and social activities in addition to the chorus practices. "We've had as many as 12 or 13, or as few as three or four," Kilzer said.
New members are always welcome. Practices are 7 p.m Mondays at Samuel's Music Co., 908 W. Jefferson Ave., Effingham.
