Several challengers for Jasper County School Board and Newton City Council positions have filed petitions but objections may complicate the April consolidated elections.
Michael Fisher is running against incumbent Mark Bolander for mayor in Newton. However, Bolander has filed an objection for Fisher's position.
In a letter protesting Fisher's eligibility to run for the position, Bolander states Fisher did not occupy his Newton residence until around Labor Day of 2012 and did not register as a voter in Newton until September.
"By either standard, since Mr. Fisher does not meet the minimum requirements of residence, he is not eligible to seek the office of mayor of the city of Newton in the 2013 municipal election and his name should not appear on the ballot," writes Bolander.
Jeff Ford, Robert Reisner, Rick Lindemann and Scott Bloomberg are all also seeking to return to their positions as alderman on the Newton City Council.
Objections have been filed against their petitions by several individuals. Diane Hickox filed an objection to Bloomberg's candidacy on the grounds of not filing a political party by the November deadline. Darrell Wallace filed an objection against Lindemann for not filing a political party by the deadline as well. Jo McGlothlin filed an objection against Reisner's candidacy, citing blacked-out parts of his petitions and statements of candidacy.
Three seats will be open in the Jasper County Board of Education in the consolidated election. Vice President Gordon Millsap and Holly Farley are seeking re-election against challengers Mandy Rieman, Don Leventhal, Andrew Pullen and Jed Earnest. Earnest and Pullen have filed objections against Farley, Rieman and Leventhal.
Hearings on the Newton City Council objections will be held at 2, 3 and 4 p.m. Thurday and additional hearings at 1 and 1:30 p.m. Friday. All of the hearings will be held at the city hall conference room.
Jasper County Board of Education objection hearings are tentatively scheduled for Monday.
