EFFINGHAM — The Lady Eagles held Robinson to single digits in points in three separate quarters and cruised to a 55-28 win Thursday night.

Newton and Robinson played a tight first quarter, with Newton edging out an 11-10 lead. But their offense and defense both picked it up from there, and by the end of the third, Newton led 48-20.

Morgan Swingler and Amy Bierman each had 10 points while Tara Wirth added nine points of her own. Bierman had a team-high seven rebounds, and Carly Niebrugge grabbed five rebounds.

Newton improves to 13-6 on the season and 6-1 in conference. They host Marshall Monday night.

Lady Cougars downed

South Central traveled to Cisne Thursday night, but could not overcome a rough second half to pick up their first win of the season and fell 47-28.

The Cougars battled Cisne in the first half, trailing just 24-20 entering the third quarter. But Cisne upped their defensive pressure, forcing turnovers and held the Cougars to just eight points in the second half.

Macie Cain topped South Central with 13 points, and Abby King added seven points of her own.

South Central falls to 0-15, and they head to Vandalia Monday night.
