A rural Dieterich woman preparing to stand trial on charges that could have resulted in a 30-year prison term pleaded guilty Thursday to a lesser charge in Effingham County Circuit Court.
Kelci N. Niemerg, 25, entered an open guilty plea on one count of aggravated battery. Niemerg had been charged with aggravated battery to a child in connection with injuries suffered by infant Nathan Dill on May 4, 2011, while she was caring for the child at her home.
Open pleas differ from negotiated pleas in that both sides agree to leave sentencing details up to the judge, rather than agree upon a sentence during the negotiation.
Sentencing in the case is set for 9 a.m. June 7.
