Water problems should be fixed in Effingham

EFFINGHAM — While residents may have detected a foul odor or taste from their drinking water over the past few days, they should now notice an improved difference.

Effingham City Public Works Director Steve Miller said the department received some calls last week about an unpleasant taste in tap water and the city began working to flush the system to dispel any lower quality liquids which may have gotten into the system.

"We started flushing fire hydrants at each of the four corners of the city and we've kept flushing to get some of the old water out and some of the new water in and hopefully eliminate any tastes and odors," he said. "I think it's better now."

Miller said the water has been tested and is safe to drink, even if a noticeable taste or smell is detected. He said the city was unsure what may have contributed to the changes in the water but believed it could have been due to the changing temperatures of the water in Lake Sara, problems connecting the mains or any changes in the temperatures in the main lines, similar to what may have happened at the Lake.

"It could be due to a few different things, but it's probably due to the temperatures of the lake," he said.

Miller said the water quality also could have been affected by the runoff from this year's snowfalls, with dirty snow melting and seeping into the water system. Although the water would have been filtered for particles, a taste or smell could have remained. In order to eliminate the taste, activated carbon is added to the water supply.

"It's kind of one of those things that it could be a single factor or a combination, and we're doing everything we can to get it back to what people are accustomed to," he said.
