Fayette County man mauled by captive bear

BEECHER CITY — A Beecher City man was injured Sunday after being attacked by his pet bear.

Marion Julius, 64, was attacked by the bear he had raised legally in captivity for the past nine years at a farm in rural Beecher City. He was attempting to attend to the unprovoked animal when he was attacked.

According to Fayette County Sheriff's Office, Julius was flown to St. John's Hospital in Springfield before being transferred to Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. However, he is not listed as a patient at the hospital.

According to The Associated Press, federal agriculture officials say Julius was licensed to keep a variety of animals on his Beecher City property known as Julius Acres.

Records show the site was home to 17 bison, eight goats, two llamas, a yak, an alpaca, a water buffalo and the North American Black bear.

Julius had the animals under an exhibitor license, which he obtained in 2012. Julius passed a series of federal inspections, including one as recently as May 29.

The bear was euthanized.
