Hearts tennis earns 7th
Effingham went 2-2 at the Triad Invitational Duals Tennis Tournament on Saturday, picking up a 7th place finish in a tough field that featured some of the best teams in the state.
The Hearts got off to a good start in match one, beating Sacred Heart Griffin 4-1. The doubles pairings of Isaac Foreman and Jason Wohltman, Wyatt Wohltman and Jared Minor, and Parth Maheshwari and Nick Pellman each won their matches in two sets. In singles, Aaron Meyers lost in two sets, but Jake Heuerman picked up the final win in the No. 2 singles slot to give Effingham the 4-1 team victory.
Against the host team, Effingham struggled to a 5-0 defeat. Foreman and Jason Wohltman came the closest to a win, but fell in a tiebreaker to Traid’s Nick Luttrell and Ben Lopatin 10-8.
The Hearts lost to South Elgin 4-1, but the doubles team of Maheshwari and Heuerman were a bright spot for Effingham. Playing the No. 3 doubles team of Jesse Benbrook and Muhammad Zamir, the Effingham duo took the first set 7-5, then coasted in the second 6-1 for the lone win of the match.
Despite the two tough setbacks, the Hearts ended the tournament on a strong note. Battling Christian Brothers College High School, Heuerman picked up his second singles win in a 13-11 tiebreaker, and Effingham won the final two doubles matches to squeak out a tight, 3-2 win.
“The competition was fantastic, and that’s why we play this tournament,” Hearts coach Greg Brumleve said. “All of the guys played their best tennis, but we still have room for improvement.”
Effingham takes the courts again today when they host Mattoon.
