SHUMWAY — Although the National Weather Service confirmed one tornado touched down near Shumway during the erratic weather Thursday night, minimal damage was reported in that area.

Following an investigation and eye witness reports, it was confirmed that a tornado touched down three miles west of Shumway off Route 33, said NWS Meteorologist Llyle Barker.

Barker said a crew from the NWS was out in northwestern Effingham County and traveling east into Shelby County and beyond to determine additional tornado activity. Although some structural damage was reported east into Neoga and on into Toledo, preliminary reports indicated that damage wasn't caused by a tornado.

“We think the damage around Toledo was straight-line winds,” said Barker, noting that the winds were in excess of 60 to 70 miles per hours. “Straight-line winds can be over 100 miles per hour, which is the equivalent of a medium tornado.”
