Children sickened at 4-H camp

MONTICELLO — A mysterious illness swept through a 4-H camp in Monticello this week, leaving dozens of children sick.

Of the 300 campers, that included area children, more than 30 became ill. David Remmert, administrator of the DeWitt Piatt Bi-County Health Department, said parents came to pick up their children and took them home after the illness started earlier in the week.

Those affected experienced vomiting and diarrhea,

In an email to parents, the camp said it took immediate action, caring for those who got ill and contacting parents and the DeWitt-Piatt Bi-County Health Department the next morning.

“Our first priority with all of our 4-H programs is the health and safety of our children, so we were understandably troubled when 30 of our campers and camp staff fell ill with vomiting and nausea on their last night at 4-H Memorial Camp in Monticello,” wrote Assistant Dean and Director of 4-H Youth Director Denise Oberle.

Remmert said the department is investigating the outbreak. The illness started earlier this week.

The camp said the symptoms of the illness usually clear up within 24 hours.

No more information was available at presstime.
