ALTAMONT — Authorities have not confirmed why a St. Elmo school board member was in the Altamont parking lot where he was found dead Friday morning.
A representative from the Effingham County Coroner's Office pronounced Dean Buzzard, 46, dead at 6:55 a.m. Friday. Buzzard had been found unresponsive at 6 a.m. that morning in a parking lot adjacent to 112 W. Adams St. in downtown Altamont, the coroner's office said in a news release.
Altamont police and Effingham City-County Ambulance personnel responded to the scene first and requested further assistance from the coroner's office.
Deputy Coroner Fred Bray said his office is investigating the death along with Altamont police and the Illinois State Police.
Bray said no further information on Buzzard's death will be released until after an autopsy today.
Buzzard had farmed in the St. Elmo area for many years and was a member of the St. Elmo District 202 Board of Education at the time of his death.
