Frontier to reimburse overcharged customers

EFFINGHAM — Frontier Telephone Company customers who saw their 911 surcharge doubled in their last bill can rest easy.

Frontier customers with 536 or 868 prefixes saw a 911 surcharge double from $2.75 to $5.50 on their last bill. But 911 Systems Administrator Jodi Moomaw said Frontier personnel told her the double-billing was a mistake on the phone company’s part.

Nick Althoff, chairman of the Effingham County Emergency Telephone System (911) Board, said Wednesday he is confident that Frontier customers will be reimbursed for the double billing on their next bills.

Telephone companies in Illinois are allowed to implement a surcharge for emergency telephone service.

The 536 prefix covers the Watson and Heartville areas south of Effingham, while the 868 prefix is used in Shumway and much of the Lake Sara community.
