VANDALIA — An accident on Interstate 70 destroyed around 200 feet of guardrail.

Marvin Jean Heisten, 60, of Effingham, was driving a blue 2007 Peterbilt truck-tractor semi-trailer westbound at 11:20 a.m. Wednesday on Interstate 70 at milepost 99 when he fell asleep at the wheel.

Heisten went off the roadway to the right, striking and tearing off more than 200 feet of the guardrail before coming to a stop. Illinois State Police officers rerouted westbound traffic onto US 40 while the vehicle was towed.

Heisten was not injured in the accident but was cited for driving too fast for conditions, improper lane usage and driving while fatigued.
