Flora teen killed in car crash

EFFINGHAM — A midday Wednesday drive for two brothers turned tragic when the brother who was driving was killed in a single-vehicle crash in the south end of Effingham County.

    Effingham County Coroner Leigh Hammer said in a news release that Chance M. Young, 18, of Flora was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:10 p.m. Wednesday. Hammer said the crash occurred on U.S. 45 about two miles north of the Effingham-Clay county line.

    Hammer said authorities responded to the scene at 11:50 a.m. She said another person in the vehicle, identified by relatives as Chance’s younger brother Mason Young, 16, was airlifted from the scene to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana. His condition was unknown at presstime.

    Hammer said Chance Young had been wearing a seat belt.

    Hammer said her office and the Effingham County Sheriff’s Department is investigating possible causes for the crash. The Sheriff’s Department had not released any information on the crash by presstime.
