Coroner responds to two deaths Monday

EFFINGHAM — Charles Funneman, 58, of the Green Creek area, was found unresponsive in his home Monday morning by a family member.

Emergency services were notified and the coroner’s office was called to the scene. Effingham County Coroner Duane Guffey responded to the scene at 9:35 a.m. and pronounced Funneman dead. The cause of death is still undetermined following an autopsy Monday. However, no foul play is suspected. 

The investigation continues by the Effingham County Coroner and final autopsy results and toxicology tests are pending. The Effingham County Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene.


At 11:15 am Monday, Effingham County Coroner Duane Guffey also responded to a residence in Effingham County near Altamont. Virgil Winter, 73, had been found unresponsive in his residence. Guffey pronounced Winter dead at 11:51 a.m. An investigation revealed Winter died from natural causes.
