Man pronounced dead after accident

---- — A Loogootee man was pronounced dead Monday afternoon after a single-vehicle accident in southern Fayette County.

Illinois State Police said Jay R. McConkey, 49, had been driving a 2001 Ford F-150 pickup on County Road 1500 North about one mile east of St. James at 4:30 p.m. when the truck left the roadway to the right, traveled several hundred feet along the shoulder, then crossed the road before overturning several times in a field.

ISP said the truck came to rest in a field. McConkey, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the truck, police said.

Effingham County Coroner Duane Guffey said McConkey was pronounced dead at St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital emergency room at about 5:30 p.m. Monday.

Guffey said his office and the state police were continuing to investigate the crash.
