City residents may have noticed a dark plume of smoke in the sky Friday afternoon.
Effingham Fire Department responded to 1901 South Banker St. at 1:20 p.m., after a passerby notified the department of the smoke. The property is located behind Poss Music, and owned by Mickey Passalacqua.
According to her son, Matt, he was burning debris to clean up an area near property the family donated use of for the Effingham Community Garden, when the fire began to spread. Firefighters unrolled a hose and put out the fire before it could spread to surrounding buildings.
“The dark smoke came from railroad ties, which are covered by oil,” said Effingham Fire Chief Joe Holomy.
Firefighters remained on scene for about 45 minutes, soaking the area surrounding the fire to ensure the fire wouldn't spread. According to Holomy, with burning season beginning, calls to the fire department concerning visible smoke will become more common.
“We will periodically get calls when people see smoke,” he said.
