Health signup still available

EFFINGHAM — As the signup deadline for health insurance under the federal Affordable Care Act nears, area residents can still take advantage of extended signup hours at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center in Mattoon.

According to the Sarah Bush Lincoln website, the hospital between Mattoon and Charleston will be open for late signups from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. today, noon to 4 p.m. Sunday and 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday.

Meanwhile, the Effingham County Health Department has signed up 75 people for the federal insurance program since Jan. 1. Administrator Rebecca Merten said the department offered after-hours and weekend appointments throughout the signup period to help as many people as possible.

Merten said the process locally has gone smoothly. She did say, however, that some people have had "minor issues."

"It turned out to cost more or less than they thought it would," Merten said.

Merten said a representative from the State of Illinois was scheduled to visit the department next week to conduct an assessment of the process.

The signup period expires at 11:59 p.m. Monday.
