NEWTON — Newton City Council discussed Tuesday a grant intended to improve city sidewalks and streets.

The city has received the Safe Routes to School Grant in the past and is applying for it again. The federal grant would provide $200,000 in improvements to sidewalks and streets within a two-mile radius of schools, which would cover all of Newton.

The grant would provide up to $160,000 with $40,000 to be raised by the city.

Mayor Mark Bolander said the city would be using the grant for more major improvements to city streets.

"What we have talked about doing was the expensive stuff like the curbs and gutters," he said.

The council approved authorizing John Stone of Connor & Connor Inc. to pursue the grant. Stone said he believed that there would be competition for the grant from many municipalities around the area.

"Anytime they come out with one of these, they get a lot of applicants," he said. "It doesn't hurt to try."
