Greenup arsonist sentenced to 20 years

TOLEDO — A man who plead guilty to setting over 30 suspicious fires in Cumberland County was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Levi Barnes, 22, of Greenup appeared in Cumberland County Court Monday to hear the sentencing handed down by Judge Millard Everhart.

Barnes had entered an open plea in September, which waived the right to a jury trial. The court had previously accepted an open plea from Paul McCormick, 23, of Toledo, who was also plead guilty to involvement in the arson. Everhart said Barnes' sentence was based on the arrangement made between the prosecution and defense in McCormick's case.

Everhart said a variety of factors weighed on his decision for the 20-year sentencing, including Barnes' lack of a criminal record, the restitution fees he is required to pay as a result of the fires, the injury of one firefighter in the fires, as well as Barnes' position as a volunteer firefighter in Greenup at the time of the crimes.

Barnes will also be required to pay $5,000 in fees as well as restitution of $432,609.47 for his actions. He will also be under mandatory supervision for three years following his release from prison.
