Interstate construction project enters next stage

A five-year interstate 57/70 construction project has begun entering the next stage.

Construction was slated to begin Monday on rebuilding the exit and entrance ramps at Keller Drive and Fayette Avenue, which will cause some temporary changes in traffic patterns.

In an effort to get this phase done as quickly as possible, marked detours will be utilized to divert exiting interstate ramp traffic over the Fayette Avenue and Keller Drive interchanges.

This means that motorists will need to be cautious and attentive during construction.

Illinois Department of Transportation advises motorists to slow down and follow signs and message boards. While access to both interchanges will remain open throughout the process, IDOT recommends finding an alternative route whenever possible.

The construction is part of a four-phase project to improve and expand the two interstates, said Bob Utz, IDOT construction engineer for the Effingham area.“We’re hoping this phase is done before Memorial Day,” he said.

  • Sports complex hand shake A win for sports complex

After months of planning and fundraising, Effingham Park District officials finally solidified plans for the Richard E. Workman Sports Complex.

The path to having a sports complex in Effingham actually began decades ago, but it was October of last year that Richard and Angie Workman revived the prospect by donating $5 million for construction of such a facility. Since then, the Workmans have donated an additional $1 million toward the project added to community donations of $3 million, a recent $500,000 contribution from the city and the park district's ability to issue up to $6.5 million in debt certificates that allowed the district to officially award a bid Thursday from Poettker Construction to construct the complex.
